PMJDY Participating Banks
Jan Dhan Yojana has brought cheers to the Indians due to the benefits offered by PMJDY. But many people are still confused about the participating banks where accounts can be opened. Jan Dhan account can be opened at all the public and private sector banks. Here is the list of these banks:
Public Sector Banks: There are 27 public sector banks in India which includes nationalized banks (19), SBI (6), IDBI and Bhartiya Mahila Bank and at all these banks you can open Jan Dhan Account

ID Proof Required
To open Jan Dhan Account, customer would need any one of following ID proofs:
- Voter ID Card
- Driving Licence
- Passport
- PAN Card
- Aadhar Unique ID
- NREGA Job card attested by state government

Its true that many banks are reluctant to open an account under Prime minister’s jan dhan yojna. They find flimsy grounds and misguide potential customers. Probabaly its because they are already overburdened with routine work.
This scheme has been a great success. However it will be even better if additional staff is deployed by the bank, may be outsourcing, for the sole task of opening ac under the scheme. It is suggested that the authority concerned take due corrective measures so that the benefit of this scheme reaches poorest of the poor.

I asked one of the ICICI branch near my office on navi peth, pune and they said I cannot open a zero bank account in their branch. Is it true that private sector banks do not encourage anyone to open a PMJDY account?

You should not open new account if you already have an account elsewhere. Existing a/c holders can get RuPay card issued by the bank and get insurance benefit.

If you already have an account with any of above netioned bank, you don’t need to open new account. You just need to ask for rupay card. Apply for the same. Looking at current account creadit history, branch manager would grand you the Overdraft limit.
